Classification and Reclassification

SDSU classifies positions using the California State University (CSU) Classification and Qualification Standards.

Reclassification/In-Classification Progression of Occupied, Existing Positions

Reclassification or In-Classification Progression review for occupied, existing positions may be initiated by management or the employee in accordance with relevant collective bargaining agreement provisions and the SDSU Position Classification Review Procedures.  Please review these procedures for more information and detailed processing instructions. You may also contact [email protected] for consultation on the reclassification/in-classification progression process.

Reclassification of Vacant, Existing Positions

The hiring authority or designee should contact [email protected] for consultation on the reclassification of vacant, existing positions.  The hiring authority or designees will need to submit a proposed, revised position description using the SDSU Position Description Form and a proposed organization chart reflecting the desired placement of the position within the business unit.  Divisional budget authorities must approve these documents before submission to the Center for Human Resources.  These documents will serve as the basis for the classification review and determination.

The Center for Human Resources will use finalized position descriptions to update Classification, Grade, Working Title, and Reports To (supervisor) attributes for the position in PeopleSoft Position Management.

Divisional budget authorities and the Office of Budget and Finance must authorize and establish any budgetary or accounting changes to the position via the Position Action Request Form.

Initial Classification of New Positions

The hiring authority or designee should contact [email protected] for consultation on the classification of new positions.  The hiring authority or designees will need to submit a proposed position description using the SDSU Position Description Form and a proposed organization chart reflecting the desired placement of the position within the business unit.  Divisional budget authorities must approve these documents before submission to the Center for Human Resources.  These documents will serve as the basis for the classification review and determination.

Separate from the classification review process, divisional authorities and the Office of Budget and Finance must authorize and establish new positions via the Position Action Request Form.

The Center for Human Resources will use finalized position descriptions to update Classification, Grade, Working Title, and Reports To (supervisor) attributes for the position in PeopleSoft Position Management.
